The frame on the left is what they look like before I distressed and painted it. And the frame on the right is what it looks like after many attempts to get the look I wanted. It seems acrylic paint is not porous LOL! DUH!
First I painted it with Metallic Pearl White acrylic paint. Then after the paint dried I dabbed Dark Brown fluid chalk. After the fluid chalk dried I hit some areas of the frame with sandpaper and then I rub Walnut Stain distress ink over it and let it sit for some mins and then I rubbed the distress ink off with a paper towel. The dark areas you see on the frame is where the walnut stain dried and took ahold of the frame. The distress ink will not dry on the acrylic paint. Which is why it took me a couple of hours to do this LOL! Trial and error. But now I know how to do it for my other frames I bought.
The effect in real life is a brown looking metallic finish. I am going to try this on chipboard next to see if I can make a piece of chipboard look like metal.
